I confess that my enthusiasm for the Intro to New Zealand Cinema course increased even more when I saw we’d be watching a 1977 film with a 29-year-old Sam Neill. 😍
Sleeping Dogs was quite good, gripping. I decided to rent Smash Palace (1981) by the same director, Roger Donaldson. It was fantastic. I saw it decades ago, probably at a college film festival. I remember liking it, but I think I was too young to really appreciate the themes and the performances.
Interesting to note that Roger Donaldson went on to do a bunch of Hollywood films, such as No Way Out, The Bounty, and Cocktail. He is very good at action!
